Escape Hunt

26th March 2026

In March 13 members of the Activities group visited an escape room at Escape Hunt in Leeds. Our game was The Fourth Samurai, set in ancient Japan, where our intrepid adventurers were tasked with defeating an evil warlord. The idea is to solve a series of puzzles to escape various rooms and advance through the game to complete the challenge. As this game has twin rooms we were able to play as two teams so there was an added air of competition! Sadly neither team managed to defeat the warlord before our hour was up so we didn’t escape. It’s fair to say some of the puzzles were a bit too puzzling and the time went too quickly! Both teams displayed great teamwork and enthusiasm and it was an entertaining morning

Christmas Wreath Making

November 2025

The group enjoyed a worthwhile workshop making Christmas Wreaths at Woodend Nurseries, Great Preston

First Aid and CPR

1st October 2025

U3a member Sue, retired nurse educator, along with Tony, a former first aid trainer, gave a very hands on first aid and CPR session. We found out how to use a defibrillator and checked out the defibrillator outside Garforth WMC. We also used a 'pillow partner' to demonstrate how to deal with a choking situation. By the end of the session we all agreed that we could confidently take the correct action and that it had been a very worthwhile session.

September 2025 - Bat Walk

A very pleasant evening was spent at St Aidans under the guidance of a very knowledgeable RSPB volunteer. Members used RSPB bat detection equipment to listen to the bats flying around and had a fantastic experience.

August 2025 - Wine Tasting

u3a member Diana expertly led us through a very enjoyable and educational wine tasting afternoon. Diana carefully chose seven bottles of red, white and rose wine for us to sample. She asked us to describe the wines we tasted, asked if we could recognise flavours, shared her insights and congratulated us on our varying descriptions. The wine was accompanied by unusual cheeses and we had a fun and informative wine quiz. We agreed that it was a lovely way to spend an afternoon thanks to Diana.

Quirky Ales - Micro Brewery

16th May 2025

We met in the taproom at Quirky Ales, Ash Lane, Garforth and enjoyed a delicious drink while the owner gave us a potted history of the microbrewery and his involvement. We then went into the brewery, admired the machinery and were glad we didn't pay their electricity bill. Back into the taproom for another beer and chinwag. A most informative and fun way to spend the afternoon.

"Escape from Castleford"

24th April 2025

Fourteen members of the group visited Escapologist at Escape in Castleford. Half of the group entered the Operation Slimeworth, A Heist Too Far Room and the other half were in the Vertic Alley & Palace Secrets Escape Room. Unfortunately neither group managed to solve all the difficult, cryptic clues in the 60 minutes and had to be released. However it was very enjoyable and we vowed to do better next time.

The following week another 6 members ventured into the 'Spy Heist' rooms and with terrific teamwork they managed to escape (but they were given an extra 10 minutes!).

Willow Weaving 25th March 2025

Following our successful first venture, a group of 14 of us visited Space 2 at Old Fire Station where we learned a new craft during an enjoyable three hours we are about to learn how to make Willow Bird Feeders and Fat Balls.
New members will always be welcome, you do not have to attend all activities, feel free to pick and choose, just contact Convenor Chrissie M on the website link

Putt Stars 20th Feb 2025

We held our first Activity Outing in February to Putt Stars at Thorpe Park and enjoyed playing crazy golf and duck pin bowling. Duck pin bowling is very similar to 10 pin bowling but with a shorter lane and hand sized bowls and great fun. We're close to finalising plans for wicker weaving in March, Escape Rooms in April and a Brewery Tour in May.
